Started in 2024, our lab is part of the Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering at Institute of Science Tokyo (formerly Tokyo Institute of Technology).

We explore formal aspects of symbols, with a particular interest in (1) describing features and functions of various symbols in the real world, and (2) understanding how these symbols enable reading, learning, and thinking. Our work spans both theoretical research and practical applications.

We have multiple ongoing projects that bridge theory and practice of forms of symbols. A key example of our social implementation efforts is the development of a typeface customization system which allows users to adjust typefaces according to their individual reading characteristics. Here is a comprehensive list of our research projects.

We welcome researchers and students to join our group. If you are interested, please read this page and feel free to contact us with any questions.

We maintain a close working relationship with Nohara Lab, sharing both student facilities and regular seminars.
